Gallon

St Ultan's Church

It is believed St Ultan of Ardbraccan in Meath, travelled to Killinkere in the 7th century, and established the first church here. The present church in Gallon townland is first mentioned in 1406. The church was abandoned during the protestant reformation in Ireland 1590-1641. All that remains of the church today is the west gable, with a single window and the foundations of the other three walls. A nice corbel stone with a carved mask, see image below, has been inserted below the window. The weather was awful during my visit, but I am not sure if the site merits a return trip.

Situated: Travelling west through Killinkere turn left at the National school. After 1.2 kilometres turn right up a narrow track. The Church is in the graveyard about 600 metres down here.
